After working with the New York theatre company Nature Theater of Oklahoma, Zachary Oberzan went 100% solo. He now directs, shoots, sings and acts. In his performances he repeatedly walks the fine line between fiction and documentary. His stories are autobiographical and yet bursting with imagination; but oddly enough, in spite of this personal signature, you recognize an underlying broader social reality.

An elaborate experiment with the concept of Before-and-After photographs, Your brother. Remember? splices and dices home videos, Hollywood film footage, and live performance. As kids in rural America, Zachary and his older brother Gator loved making home versions of their favorite films, most notably Jean-Claude Van Damme’s karate opus Kickboxer, and the notorious cult film Faces of Death.

In the winter of 2012, two famous American performance artists sat in anonymous hotel rooms on the West Coast, waiting to take the stage, and in a bizarre coincidence, over-dosed on the anxiety drug Xanax. One survived, one did not. The two individuals are Whitney Houston, who tragically died, and the author of this piece, who lived.
