Her Right, whose title is inspired by the silent film Uzbekkino (1931, dir. G. Cherniak), is a film recalling the political campaign Hujum (attack) undertaken by the Communist Party to emancipate and unveil women in Uzbekistan.
On Friday 24.11, the film ZUKHRA by Saodat Ismailova will be screened at LUCA School of Arts, followed by a conversation with the artist.
Saodat Ismailova is an Uzbek filmmaker and artist graduated from Tashkent State Art Institute in Uzbekistan and Le Fresnoy, National Studio of Contemporary Arts in France. Departing from a documentary practice, her films are rhythmed by historical and mythical temporalities, weaving non-linear, dreamlike narratives with and alongside ancestral knowledge. Her films and video installations were presented in Biennale of Venice, Berlinale IFF, Rotterdam IFF, CPH DOX etc. Works of Saodat Ismailova are in collection of Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, The Centre Pompidou, Paris and Almaty Museum of Arts, Kazakhstan and private collections. In 2022, she the Eye Art & Film Prize (Amsterdam) for her oeuvre, in which she devotes attention to the complex, layered culture of her motherland.
