Filmmaker Pieter Geenen is no stranger to the Beursschouwburg film audience. Two years ago, The Nation premiered with us, and he was our guest last season with Meggy Rustamova, Eitan Efrat and Sirah Foighel Brutmann, talking about their collective, Messidor. This year he joins us with Mirador.

Down by the Strait of Gibraltar, the European and African continents almost seem to touch one another. On one of these continents, the prospect of a better life motivates countless African refugees to try to cross over to Europe, while from the other side, the panoramic view causes tourists to stop and wonder at the African expanse that rises on the horizon only 14 km away.
In Mirador, it is all about ‘looking'. They look at us, and we look at them. It is 'we' versus 'them', 'here' versus 'there'. The lightheartedness of the tourist seems in such shrill contrast to the existence of the refugee, and the landscape serves as a place to reflect about migration, tourism, identity and globalization.
