Meet the ingenious upcyclers bringing you electro-Congolese rumba rock: a one-of-a-kind blend of funky and punky experimental Afro-pop played with an array of homemade percussion and string instruments. Singing in Lingala, they celebrate the working class, stand firmly against the conflict in Congo, and offer a message of hope and resilience to Kinshasa’s youth. Fresh off their summer gigs at Gentse Feesten and Esperanzah, and now that their debut album is out in the world, it’s about time you witnessed their electrifying presence at Beursschouwburg.

AKAR is a musical and visual collaboration between Shama Bongo (Singer, Projects producer & manager), Sarah Carlier (Singer-songwriter, Musician, Music Producer), Rokia Bamba (DJ, Sound designer), BenRichard (VJ, DJ, Sound designer). The project was born in Brussels during the Afropolitan festival in July 2021, following a « carte blanche » offered by BOZAR. And what was supposed to be a one time thing became something bigger. The name AKAR has different meanings in multiple languages and even on several continents... It means ROOT in Sudanese, Malay & Indonesian, WILLINGNESS in Hungarian, FLOW in Turkish, and DISTURB, AGITATE & MAKE TABOO in Hebrew. The 4 artists all use different dialects but speak the same language: music.
AKAR is currently in residence at the belgian Africa Museum. In this context, the collective is conducting research in sound, video and photo archives. The idea is to play, transform and assemble them as fragments to tell stories in the live show.
