Friday 05.12 panel talk at 19:00 (BEFORE the performance)
Of Friendship (De l’amistat) is a surreal, satirical comedy by the Barcelona-based collective Las Huecas. Pushing the edges of autofiction and meta-theater, the piece playfully dissects the fragile beauty and contradictions of being friends who make theater together. Mistakes, egos, and collective chaos are laid bare in a delirious experiment of identity-splitting, as their onstage doubles echo and distort them, blurring fiction and reality.
Part of a triptych on the practice of friendship—alongside a performative lecture and a forthcoming documentary—Of Friendship dismantles the conventions of traditional theater with sharp, absurd humor. With echoes of their acclaimed Aquellas que no deben morir, Las Huecas explore group identity, excess, and the messy intimacy that binds people together. In a world of commodified connections, their work turns friendship itself into an unruly, necessary act.
about
Las Huecas is a collective founded by creators and performers Júlia Barbany, Núria Corominas, Esmeralda Colette, and Andrea Pellejero. Over eight years, they have built a distinct theatrical language that fuses the aesthetics of contemporary European theater with Catalonia’s rich comedic and satirical traditions. Following the success of Aquellas que no han de morir, they premiered De l’amistat at Temporada Alta, selling out all performances at Sala Beckett in January 2024. With performances at festivals and venues across Spain, Las Huecas continues to carve out a space for sharp, playful, and thought-provoking work that examines collective identity, friendship, and the contradictions of contemporary life.

panel talk
On Friday 5th the performance is preceded by a panel talk in english, from 19:00 till 20:00 in the Silver Space.
Friendship: Seeking the Similar or Embracing the Other?
Nothing sadder than being surrounded by friends and still feeling alone. It is said that loneliness is how neoliberalism feels. That it is part of a political strategy that undermines the potential of radical collectivity. Can friendship be that radical pact? Or has it become part of neoliberalism, and are we only looking for our equals, for ‘sameness’, in our friendships too? Can friendship be the crack, the in-between of the public and the intimate? And how do we set the boundaries between private and work when we collaborate with friends?
Las Huecas, Marta Echaves, and Carolina Mendonça will delve into how friendship and power intersect, both on stage and off. The talk is moderated by Katleen Van Langendonck, Europalia's coordinator for performing arts & literature.
Marta Echaves is a researcher, writer and cultural programmer, who coordinates activities for Caja Negra publishing house. She has curated exhibitions, creative residencies, and artistic research courses, she has taught in a variety of educational settings, and she has collaborated with artists through a methodology of shared writing. While her long-term projects take on different formats, you might know Marta from the epilogue she wrote to "Raving", by Mackenzie Wark (Caja Negra, 2023). Currently she is working on a new book set to publish via the Cielo Santo publishing house.

Choreographer and performer Carolina Mendonça develops a practical-theoretical research that she shares in workshops that deal with practices such as telepathy, levitation and deep listening. She always builds her work in collaboration with other artists, such as Catalina Insignares, Marcelo Evelin, Marcela Santander, Dudu Quintanilha, Carolina Bianchi and others. In September 2025 Carolina presented her most recent project right here in Beurrschouwburg: “Something is Approaching” lingers with what violence implants in us: tension, rumination, a sort of damnation, a muscular readiness.
