about
Onder de Straatstenen, het Strand (Under the Pavement, the Beach) is an audio project by Lisa Matthys and Annelies Vaneycken, supported by Brussels Heritage. The project explores children's free play in Brussels and draws on interviews and various archives to understand how children have created their own world in Brussels' public spaces over time. Terrains vagues, or vacant lots, play an important role in this, against the backdrop of urban development, urban activism and cultural shifts.
The project collects stories from three periods of the past hundred years at three locations in Brussels: the Marolles in the 1950s, Rasquinet Park in Schaerbeek in the 1970s, and the Tour & Taxis site in the 2010s. Onder de Straatstenen, het Strand takes a critical look at the increase in programmed public space and the disappearance of places where children can appropriate the city on their own initiative.
Lisa Matthys and Annelies Vaneycken are artists with a shared interest in social engagement, participation and children's free play.
