In this six-part series of discussions – Small Talks – we’ll be taking a closer look at the different perspectives that define our reality and our norms. Normal Schnormal!

The bodies we see on stage are often incredibly fit. The typical dancer’s body is one that we might associate with macrobiotic diets and strenuous physical exercise.

In the context of Normal Schnormal, we’ll be questioning the normative bodies we see on stage. The performance of Doris Uhlich (Ravemachine) explores the boundaries of a different kind of on-stage physicality. In a linked Small Talk event, we’ll be broaching the topic of ableism and able-bodiedness.

In the intersectional discourse we often talk of ethnic-cultural, generational and/or sexual factors, but less often do we speak of disability. Historian Anaïs van Ertvelde is carrying out a research project entitled Rethinking Disability. Her topics of interest touch upon the history of social justice movements, of vulnerability, of gender and sexuality and of (the possibility of) historical representation.
