Urban trees and urban forests to mitigate climate change in cities: Solution or challenge?

The presentation will introduce the recent challenge of climate change impacts, namely heat and drought and subsequently pests, that impact our urban green infrastructure, in particular trees. Results from a broad literature analysis, data from own empirical field studies as well as from planting experiments will shed light on state and future of urban trees and forests foreseen to mitigate heat, noise and air pollution in cities. Moreover, the role of urban land management and urban forestry on the one hand and active citizens as well as forms of local stewartship on the other will be illuminated. The presentation wll not deliver a receipt how future urban treescapes will look like but attempts to trigger thinking about different alternatives, conflicting insights and opportunities of an informed discourse.
