Yodeling is not just a Swiss thing!
Uoeia sounds like an unusual yodelling tone. And the glottis: that’s the space between the vocal chords where sounds are produced. Make no mistake, voice tone can also be subject to transformation!
UOEIA III/ That Global Glottis is a comprehensive evening programme (brimming with lectures, films and performances) poised on the cutting edge of experimental sound, opera and the phenomenon of yodelling: the voice technique which switches between chest and head voice.
Yodelling can be heard everywhere: in the Alps , coming from African Pygmies, and now Bollywood star Kishore Kumar and the eccentric guest artists who will demonstrate their remarkable skill in this worldwide phenomenon: including Bart Plantenga (NL), Bernhard (Beny) Betschart (CH) & Karin Gwerder (CH), Myriam van Imschoot (BE) and Doreen Kutzke.
Language no problem
Programme:
- Bart Plantenga (NL) will present a lively video lecture, which will cover many corners of the yodeling world.
- Voice artist Phil Minton (UK) is known for his exuberant and provocative vocals, which often includes his trademark avant-garde version of Welsh yodeling with that glottal twist. He'll surprise you with his yodel version of John Cage's famous Mesostics.
- Bernhard Betschart (CH) and Karin Gwerder (CH) present 'naturjodels' from their native Muotathal in Switzerland, where yodeling is passed on from generation to generation. Bernhard's father appeared in some of Hugo Zemp's famous yodel documentaries and Cyrill Schläpfer's Ur-Musig. He will give a demonstration of various Yuutzes.
- Myriam van Imschoot (BE) & Doreen Kutzke (DE) perform "HOLA HU", a duet composition for 2 yodelers in which a yodel phrase is consistently deconstructed and reconstructed from its smallest micro-elements.
- Myriam Van Imschooot presents YOUYOUYOU, a performance in which 10 Brussels women sing the arabic yodel, the zaghareet (in french 'you you'). Quite a hallucinating situation!
