Marlene Monteiro Freitas Paradise - private collection

It’s possible that the name Marlene Monteiro Freitas doesn’t ring any bells. This striking Cape Verdean dancer is known as the enfant terrible of contemporary choreography. At the moment she’s doing really well with her baroque aesthetic and surreal images. She’s bringing ‘her’ paradise with her to our place.

Freitas attacks the myth of creation and opens the gates to paradise where it is forbidden to forbid. It’s a place where bestiality, horror, carnal energy, carnivalesque tinges and gruesome rituals reign supreme.

Like a flamboyant maestro in a torero costume, Freitas rules with an iron hand over a quartet of crazed male creatures (like a bird-magician with blue hands or a jester with a deformed face). These angels, escaped from hell, are carried away by the sound of reverberating organ music, African rhythms and pop rock melodies. This is going to be a choreographic concert in the garden of our imagination.
