The annual Spiegel prize – so called after the photographer, Patrick De Spiegelaere, who died young – honours outstanding and innovative initiatives which contribute to creating a realistic image of Africa. How do we view Africa from Flanders? Is our vision still clouded by the colonial past? By fear or ignorance? How tenacious are stereotypes regarding the ever-smiling African?
