"I was never able to skateboard, nor was I ever able to date boys in school. Like skateboards they all seemed to run from under my feet."
For his first solo presentation in Belgium, Luís Lázaro Matos (°1987, lives and works in Lisbon) designed a stage-like environment built out of a mural, drawings and sculptures. Surrounded by fictional architecture structures combining crystal palaces and skateparks, the dream-like setting invites the audience to inhabit a waterfall where skateboards flow down the stream. The poems drawn in the boards choreograph a friction between shared and intimate dynamics, which signal the artist’s sharp critique of contemporary social dynamics marked by digital liquidity while echoing Lázaro Matos’ pop sensibility.
