Urban Utopias session
w/ Arquitectura Expandida + Soumaya Phéline

Colombian collective Arquitectura Expandida (AXP) and Brussels artist Soumaya Phéline have both lost loved ones as a result of police violence. These trauma's have shaped their lives, their creative practices, and their activism. During this morning session Soumaya and AXP will continue a dialogue on how to deal with violence and trauma in order to work towards shared urban utopias. They will invite all participants not only to reflect on how different forms of systemic violence affect the public spaces of the cities we inhabit, but also to practice concrete “utopias”: tools and strategies to resist these violences, self-organise, and negotiate decisions collectively. Together we can (re)define urban utopias, not as unreachable dreams, but as experimental, provisional, and unfinished visions, that are at the same time concrete, material, and everyday.

Arquitectura Expandida (CO/ES/BE) is a Bogotá-based collective composed of activists, two architects, a visual artist, a lawyer, and others. Since 2010 they collaborate with grassroots movements in the research, exploration and creation of alternative spaces for experimental governance, citizen participation and self-management in peripheral urban areas. The focus is on the right to the city, urban commons and rebalancing power asymmetries in public space. Their repertoire of actions ranges from urban planning research to collective self-construction, data visualisation and different forms of activist art.

a.pass is an artistic and educational research environment that welcomes research practitioners in an international collaborative and trans-disciplinary program. Until the end of 2023 a.pass included two complementary structures that operate in parallel and in dialogue: the Postgraduate Program and the Research Center.
