John Akomfrah The Stuart Hall Project
Deze majestueuze film neemt de kijker mee op een rollercoaster van omwentelingen, conflicten en keerpunten die van de 20ste eeuw “de eeuw van de mediacampagne”, mondiale politieke en culturele veranderingen gemaakt heeft.
Stuart Hall (1932 - 2014) was een zeer invloedrijke en gewaardeerde cultuurtheoreticus, denker en commentator. Onder zijn collega’s bevinden zich reuzen als Noam Chomsky, Susan Sontag, Alan Ginsberg, Michel Foucault en Gore Vidal.
Deze documentaire navigeert tussen de vele kwesties die Hall in tv-uitzendingen besprak. Van “the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament”, de bevrijdingsstrijd van de jaren ‘50 en '60 tot het einde van het Europese kolonialisme of de Koude Oorlog, de opkomst van het feminisme, de Balkanoorlogen en de lopende discussies over ras en klasse. Geen onderwerp blijft onbesproken.
Blending archival footage, home movies, Hall’s television appearances and the music of Miles Davis, Akomfrah has created a film bursting with ideas that is also enormously entertaining, in no small measure due to the fact that Hall himself is such an engaging personality.
