Hoe leggen kunstenaars relaties contractueel vast? Op welke manier kunnen ze vorm geven aan auteurschap, waarde, economie, spreiding en participatie en deze aspecten delen met elkaar, en tegelijk hun praktijk zinderend, levendig en veranderlijk houden? In welke werkomstandigheden kan je je als kunstenaar begeven? Hoe kan je overleven als kunstenaar?

Tijdens Bâtard Festival nodigt Caveat iedere dag artiesten uit om een mogelijk antwoord op deze vragen te formuleren in de vorm van een publicatie en een presentatie/performance. De deelnemende kunstenaars zien publiceren als een manier om ideeën te delen, als een emanciperend en verbindend medium, als een instrument om te denken en als een (derde) sculptuur.

Hun artistieke praktijk wordt gekarakteriseerd door een intens onderzoek naar en alertheid voor de context waarin hun werk tot stand komt, getoond wordt, circuleert en bewaard wordt. Ze zijn op actieve en kritische wijze bezig met het delen, samenbrengen en uitdragen van deze onderwerpen, zowel naar hun peers toe als naar een breder publiek. Of zoals Ben Kinmont ooit zei ‘There is also a need outside of here’.

Caveat is een collectief onderzoeksproject dat reflecteert over en werkt op de ecologie van kunstenaarspraktijken. Het project werd opgestart in 2017 door het Brusselse kunstenaarsinitiatief Jubilee. De naam alludeert naar het legale principe caveat emptor (koper, wees up uw hoede), en wijst op de ambitie van het onderzoek om bewustwording te genereren en samen alternatieven te creëren.

The conversations at Beursschouwburg will take place in a display module conceived by graphic designer and researcher Loraine Furter & artist Laurie Charles. The display is part of Speaking Volumes, a hybrid research project about feminist publishing practices, between art and activism — a blind spot in the history of artists’ books. The research takes different forms, from graphic documents to performative events, and materializes on a display inspired by Alison Knowles' artwork The Big Book, a giant structure with oversized pages she built in 1966.
