Postbinary

We will read Octavia Butler. We choose a fiction that re-situates bodies, displacing, fragmenting, re-stitching identities and boundaries. Questioning what seems "normal". Bodies and territories that embody past inheritances and risk opening themselves up to possible futures. Bodies of the present in which we recognize processes of transformation and becoming in progress - sometimes initiated by the resistance of minority positions to the dominant normality. Abduction, alienation, transformation, Afrodiasporics subjects live the estrangements that science fiction writers envision. (Greg Tate quoted by Kodwo Eshun) Other worlds, other imaginations are needed to think the future. With Octavia Butler, Feminism is the Future.

Anyanwu tore her cloth and dived into the sea before her confidence deserted her entirely. There, she transformed herself as quickly as was comfortable. She became the dolphin whose flesh she had eaten. - Octavia Butler, Wild Seed
