After several chapters, we come together for dinner one last time with Za’atar on the table to share the stories, the people, the landscapes and the recipes that can be traced by following the life-line of a single plant.

Following her residency in Palestine, where the herb Oregano is foraged from the wild to make the famous Za’atar mixture, Samah Hijawi returns to Beursschouwburg to bring her chapter on Za’atar full circle. In this performance, she brings the fundamental issues around food to the table: time, trade and the capitalist systems that dominate how we eat. Together we will share a meal grown in the soil of faraway places, herbs and spices that were picked by people’s hands who we have never met—but they become part of us.
From Palestine (via Jordan), Syria and Ethiopia all the way to Belgium, we come together for dinner one more time to share the wild, tentacular stories of people, landscapes and the planets in our universe that can be traced by following the lifelines of a few herbs in a single, simple dish.

Samah Hijawi is a multi-media artist (a painter, a performer, an astrologer, a storyteller, a researcher and an academic, a cook — it’s up to you to decide). Regardless of the form through which she materialises her work, her projects are always deeply rooted in historical narratives which are used to re-imagine our contemporary life. The spectacular outcomes of the trails of migration of the different species in our worlds is a topic she comes back to often in her work. In 2020 she started a long-term project called Kitchen. Table. where she researches the movement of food practices over time and across geographies, and the body as a site of food memory. Her works have been shown in The Royal Museum of Fine Arts Brussels, Museum M, The Hayward Gallery in London, BOZAR and Beursschouwburg in Brussels, MoMa and Apex Art - New York; Darat al Funun - Amman, among others.
