In EL VAIVÉN, Camilo Mejía delves into the profound relationship between his body and the salsa genre. The layered elements defining this connection—ranging from the shame of secret lessons with his grandmother to the proud strength of cultural resistance—have not only deeply influenced his own life but have also contributed to the collective imagination of Latin America. By exploring concepts such as Blackness, masculinity, queerness, migration, and spirituality, Camilo challenges dominant narratives around these subjects and pushes the boundaries of how we understand them. EL VAIVÉN expresses Camilo Mejía’s deep connection to dance and salsa music, drawing you into a mysterious realm filled with stories, memories, dreams, myths, and vivid soundscapes rising unexpectedly from the theater in a surround sound installation.
