Girls just wanna, they really, really wanna have fun: the ultimate guilty pleasure of the Generation Y.
In the 90s, there was simply no escaping the Spice Girls! On billboards, school satchels, lunch boxes and in the cinema: the girl group that marketed the girl power motif from the "riot grrrl" movement from underground to mainstream, included their biggest sing-along hits (Wannabe, Say You'll Be There , Spice up Your Life ... a sophisticated mix of 70s disco motifs with 90s hip-hop sensibility) in a film without a plot and a double-decker bus converted into a girl’s bedroom in pinks, purples, yellows and silvers, full of gym equipment, giant cushions and stuffed animals. Sexy, corny, cliché and with more than one fat wink, the five girls called Baby, Ginger, Scary, Sporty and Posh poured their stereotypical characters into tiny skirts, platform shoes and wig-like hairstyles.
It was A Hard Day's Night for the girls when in the run up to a concert at London's Royal Albert Hall, they had to meet the different requirements of their celebrity lifestyle - rehearsals, photo shoots, meet & greets with fans - while being hounded by their manager and thwarted by a baddie! Moreover, a record number of cameos crossed their path, including Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, Elton John, Richard O'Brien, Bob Geldof, Roger Moore, Jools Holland, Jennifer Saunders, Richard E. Grant, Elvis Costello and Meatloaf. Every generation is entitled to its "guilty pleasure"! SO, teenagers of the 90s: the Out Loud-stage is all yours ...
