30.000 layers of history
In The Wave we are faced with poignant images of the exhumation of a mass grave from the Spanish Civil War (1936 – 1939). In 2011 the filmmaker Sarah Vanagt and photographer Katrien Vermeire positioned a camera on the spot where nine victims were exhumed, who had been executed in June 1939 under general Franco’s regime. By means of a very precise time lapse series of photos it is possible to see in close-up how the nine victims’ bodies were exhumed, inch by inch.
Following the Belgian première at the Ghent Film Festival, the film can now be seen for the first time in Brussels. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the filmmakers about the issues of these contested exhumations within the current Spanish political climate, their creativity process and sources of inspiration.
