We tellen terug naar 1964. Ken Kesey, gevierd schrijver van o.a. One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, begint samen met zijn vriendengroep van vrijbuiters (“Merry Pranksters”) aan een in LSD gedrenkte roadtrip dwars door Amerika. Achter het stuur van hun psychedelisch beschilderde bus zit Neal Cassady, hét icoon van de Beat Generation dankzij zijn sleutelrol in Jack Kerouacs On the Road. De documentaire reconstrueert op minutieuze wijze deze mythische “magic trip” aan de hand van Kesey's oorspronkelijke beeld- en audiomateriaal en levert een uniek tijdsdocument.
