Seminar-style discussion and meditation on intersections of hippie counterculture and radical leftist activism.
meal included
The reading group will begin with a discussion of Simon Sadler's text "Mandalas or Raised Fists? Hippie Holism, Panther Totality, and Another Modernism", which unpacks 60s California’s Bay Area activist scene and looks at the overlaps and distinctions between the Black Panthers and the activism that emerged around the counterculture magazine “The Whole Earth Catalog”. The discussion will be punctuated by short silent meditation breaks led by the artist. Additionally Grace Ndiritu will discuss her latest project, The Ark: Center For Interdisciplinary Experimentation — a post-internet living-research/live-art project founded in 2017 – and its connection to community and ecology.
In 2012, Ndiritu left London to live in a series of rural, alternative communities, expanding an ongoing body of research into non-rational methodologies, New Age nomadic lifestyles and shamanism. She currently lives and works in Ghent.
This event is part of THE YEAR OF BLACK HEALING (2020).
