Subbacultcha! Belgium (the essential membership for new culture) celebrates its 3rd anniversary. Everybody happy!
Apart from being in charge of the experimental Italian label Presto?!, Lorenzo Senni is a tireless investigator of the mechanisms of dance music. Just like the impressive 2012 LP Quantum Jelly, this year’s Superimpositions is filled with this Milan-based thirty something’s pointillist trance, being essentially 90s-style trance permanently withheld from its own beat drop. Forcing a simple musical pattern into a sonic spiral of endlessly contagious melodies, Senni creates a more introspective piece that preserves its emotional tension and drama, all whilst urging you to abuse the dance floor.
The acclaimed Ekster release of Essential Oils definitely was one of the best homegrown outputs outputs this year. Roman Hiele is your and our man for dreamy melodies, heavily saturated drum parts, aerated acid house and flighty footwork. The Antwerp-based producer combines ambient, nineties IDM, Chicago footwork and glitchy bits into densely layered tracks with different moods. Intoxicatingly good.
Lawrence Le Doux
Since the late 90s Laurent Baudoux aka Lawrence Le Doux has assumed a variety of artistic monikers and has been a part of numerous bands. As Le Doux he first emerged a few years back, as Sun Papa & Lawrence Le Doux, moulding club tropes like plastic material, making them his own. On his 2014 EP Terrestre for Vlek, Le Doux works his beat magic, creating pulsating sun-soaked rhythms, making you feel the sweat dripping from the ceiling. Festive tracks for and ideal, dreamlike clubland.
