In the northern Japanese province of Echigo, a metres-high carpet of snow covers the sleepy villages often until May. In an attempt to document the local rituals, Ulrike Ottinger travelled to Echigo with two kabuki actors in her wake. In Unter Schnee / Under Snow stunning landscapes are interspersed with re-enactments of traditional stories.Perfectly beautiful, and a perfect end to the year!
