Once auto factory workers, the five protagonists of this supercharged documentary now apply their skills in the service of their passion: the Detroit drag racing scene. The film is less concerned with understanding the races themselves, than with conducting a search for the deeper significance of this popular sport. Underneath parallels between the taming of the Wild West and capitalism’s haunting myth upon which America was founded – Accelerate!!! –, drag racing also reveals itself to be an escape route from conventional modes of earning and burning money.

Arthus Summereder (1983) is a filmmaker, film editor, and visual artist, who studied under Harun Farocki at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Currently a PhD researcher at the University of Art and Design Linz, his work focuses particularly on the relationship between cinematic representations of non-cinematic reality, and more recently on specific aspects of mobility studies and metaphor theory in relation to film. Motorcity is Summereder's first feature-length documentary.
