MYRIAM VAN IMSCHOOT Le cadeau
Be embraced by the shrill sound of the youyou, or zaghareet, practiced by diverse groups of women.
Myriam Van Imschoot is a performance artist from Brussels who has also been making films since 2013. She is fascinated by voice, consonance and the diverse vocal techniques used to communicate across long distances. The youyou (French) or zaghareet (Arabic) is a yodelling cry of joy, which has a special place in her oeuvre. It is a shrill, trilling sound, with which women express joy or other intense emotion in North and sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and the Basque country.
Myriam Van Imschoot established youyou groups in Brussels, Jaffa, Grenoble and Oostende. Together with them, she gives vocal performances in theatres and in parks, city squares, on beaches and so on, in which she continually questions the cultural limitations of what is audible and what is not.
'Le cadeau' is a new episode. Yodelling is a metaphor for the voice that breaks, stumbles and trips at the very edge of virtuosity and vulnerability. Through portraits and witness accounts, an intimate portrait emerges: a cry in a time of migration.
