The StadsSalonsUrbains lecture series are back with a line-up of speakers from across Europe and beyond! This year they will focus on fair and sustainable transitions of cities while drawing on empirical and theoretical accounts from cities across the globe.

Lecture #4 | Muki HAKLAY
"What is the role of citizen and community science in a sustainable city?"

Citizen science has gained attention over the past fifteen year. It’s a practice that engages people who are not professional scientists in the process of research. In different forms, it exists in the natural and social sciences, and in the humanities. Different transitions have enabled it – from increase in the level of education, to the availability of smartphones. In this seminar, we will explore the emergence of citizen science and its implication for the environmental and social management of cities. What are the implications of this practice for inclusiveness and equity of cities and their inhabitants – both spatially and within communities? We will look at the complexities that citizen and community science are bringing to our understanding of the production of knowledge and its future.

Professor Mordechai (Muki) Haklay FAcSS, is a professor of Geographic Information Science at University College London (UCL) and a team leader at the Learning Planet Institute, Paris. He is the co-director of the Extreme Citizen Science group at UCL. He is also the co-founder of Mapping for Change, a social enterprise dedicated to community mapping and citizen science. Muki has over 20 years of experience in participatory science activities.

Muki has been combining the fields of Computer Science and Geography throughout his studies, culminating with a PhD in Geography (2002, UCL) which focused on Public Access to Environmental Information. In 2001 he joined UCL as a lecturer and was promoted to a professor in 2011. In 2021 he was elected as a fellow of the UK Academy of Social Sciences.
