New Wave Dance Music From South Africa

A few years ago a certain Richard Mthetwa, but we are allowed to say Nozinja of Dog, left his phone shop chain for what it was and fanatically set to work with MIDI instruments, distorted voice samples, ultra-swift rhythms and traditional Tsongadisco from his part of the country. The hyperkinetic dance music, baptized Shangaan Electro*, inundated the South African streets and in 2010 blew in the direction of Europe via the London label Honest Jon (Damon Albarn). When trendy producers like Ricardo Villalobos, Theo Parrish and Dan Snaith aka Caribou Shangaan Electro-beats also went into processing remixes, a buzz gradually rumbled in the London underground which for pioneer Nozinja resulted in staging at Roskilde and Sonar.
After tours in America and Australia the lean mean Shangaan machine is back in Europe for a forceful portion of high speed beats (up to 190 bpm, by God!) and dirty disco dancing African style! As always Nozinja is assisted by the unrivalled and highly contagious Tshe Tsha Boys (see video below) dancing and firing the whole thing up.

Don’t forget to check the soundcloud page https://soundcloud.com/nozinja and meanwhile practise in front of the mirror at home, you’ll need to!

It’s fantastic, best thing I’ve heard for a long time. It’s how music should be (Karin Dreijer Andersson -The Knife)
Daring... wildly inventive... a rare depth charge in dance music used to inspire movement (Pitchfork)
The future sound of Africa... a curveball for UK dancers (The Quietus)

AB & Beursschouwburg get together. In order to emphasise our good neighbourly (musical) relations, AB and Beursschouwburg will begin working together on a structural basis. Both houses will organise, more or less monthly, a concert in the Beursschouwburg promoted by both and focusing on exciting and adventurous music. All with only one goal in mind: further enriching Brussels' cultural and musical landscape.
